Compress PDF Documents Into Smaller Sizes

Are your PDF files suffering from bloat? PDF’s compression capabilities may be able to help. However, the size of your PDF file should depend on your task. The size of a PDF depends upon a number of factors. Here are a few:

  • Image type. Vector-based graphics are resizable and, since they are based on a mathematical formula, typically take up less space than their bitmap counterparts.
  • Image resolution. Generally the higher the resolution of embedded images, the larger the PDF.
  • Number of fonts. The larger the number of fonts, the larger the PDF.
  • Font embedding. Embedded fonts increase file size. (Note: if you must embed fonts, using a subset of fonts contained in the document reduces file size.)
  • Level of compression. By compressing files, you can reduce file size while retaining quality.

Optimizing PDF for its Intended Use

Solid Converter PDF lets you directly control the level of compression through its Optimization settings. In this tip we will show you how to compress a PDF to the optimal file size and describe what each of the selections means.

Step 1
Create Your PDF

Start the creation process by either clicking the Create PDF button in Word or Excel* or by selecting File|Print|Solid Converter PDF*. The Create PDF dialog displays.

Step 2
Select Optimization Level

In the Optimization drop-down menu, select an optimization level. Solid Converter PDF lets you select from the following:

  • None – no image compression, no image resampling, embedded fonts.
  • Web – Lossy compression, image resampling, no embedded fonts. This is ideal for on-screen display.
  • Draft quality – No resampling, lossy compression, no embedded fonts. This is useful when printing drafts or print jobs that do not require high resolution.
  • Professional quality – No resampling, lossless compression, all fonts embedded. This is ideal for high-quality print jobs.
  • Custom – Select your own compression levels. When this is selected the Image options button is enabled, where you can select different downsample and compression options, convert color to greyscale, and convert greyscale to monochrome. You can also choose fonts to embed on the Font Options tab.

Step 3
Create your PDF

When you are through changing your settings, click the Create button. Your new PDF will be optimized for its intended use.

*These selections are only available in the Professional version of Solid Converter PDF.
